The best suggestion of the week came from Cousin Emily when on our way to the grocery store, she said, "We should get a glass of wine instead." It happened to occur very near the best little wine bar in Florence, Le Volpi e l'Uva.
We sat down and organized an impromptu tasting where I led Emily through a tasting of four wonderful Tuscan wines ranging in grape variety, body and overall quality, most importantly discussing the various relationships that go into the winemaking. The grape has a relationship with the terrior, or overall land and climate attributes of the area, in terms of how it grows and the characteristics it takes on from its surroundings. As we continued chatting about the wine, the conversation turned less from the relationship of the winemaker and the wine, towards our own relationships – with friends, family and significant others, and in a way our very own "terrior".
If you find yourself with a friend in Florence and are trying to avoid grocery shopping, I suggest you spend a little time over "wine and relationships" at Le Volpi e l'Uva.
