Yesterday we took a grand adventure to Livorno! (Insert subtle sarcasm here.) I know, probably not the idyllic Italian seaside escape, but the location of two great things - cacciucco livornese and a concert with my friend Daniele's band, Chili in the Yard.
After dinner we hit up The Cavern, a local music venue, to see Daniele with Chili In The Yard. They were so great and Daniele is a verified rock star.
All in all it was a wonderful night with great food, drink, music and friends.

Setting off from Florence in a friend's car, my cousin Emily who is visiting was very excited for her first Italian car ride. Unfortunately it was already very dark and you couldn't see anything, but there really isn't too much to see anyhow. Nonetheless, we made up things around us that you "just can't see right now because it's dark" and a colorful history of the area, including the story of how Christopher Columbus first discovered Livorno and upon arriving took a look around and said, "Let's go the other way," thus discovering America.
Our first stop was for cacciucco livornese, which is basically a seafood stew. It's all sorts of marine creatures cooked together in a tomato base and served as a stew over bread. My dear cousin Emily was a sport for trying it out, but ultimately the fish heads and eel parts proved too much to handle.
She did however, love the sorbetto with vodka and limoncello.
