Open-air markets are big all over Italy and they're one my absolute favorite ways to pass the time. Markets pop up all over the place and range in content from artigianale food and wine to household odds and ends including mops and tablecloths. One of my favorites in Florence is the Cascine market that happens only on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. until 1 or 2 p.m.
You can find everything from clothing and shoes, to fresh flowers and home decorations, to all sorts of food vendors with everything from porchetta sandwiches to hamburgers to hot pasta. My friend Maureen and I went so she could grab a few light sweaters for 10 euros each before she headed back to California - very useful for working the winter months in Long Beach. We also found my favorite stand with gazillions of various espresso cups, plates, tea sets, digestivo glasses, etc that you can mix and match to make a set of your favorites for only 1 euro a piece.
Cascine is the largest park in Florence and is located just west of Porta al Prato on the northwest side of the center. It's about a 20 minute walk from the Duomo and worth it - especially in the summer when you can also enjoy the gorgeous public pool for the afternoon.
